This fastener can be made with a face for Halloween or without a face for Thanksgiving.
Materials:
Worsted weight yarn in orange and a tiny scrap of green for the stem.
Follow pattern for towel topper to Row 17. Then continue as follows:
Sl st in first st to form a circle. Turn.
Rnd 1: 3 dc in each st. Join with sl st in top of ch 3.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, *sc in next st, 2 sc in next st. Repeat around. Sl st in top of ch 1. Fasten off and weave in ends.
For the stem I tied the green yarn in a bow and used fabric glue to glue it to the top of the pumpkin. The glue sets the yarn so it won't come untied in the wash. For the jack-o-lantern you can cut out the face pieces in black felt and used the same fabric glue to glue them to the pumpkin face.
